Hotel Traube > History

History

This hotel was almost certainly built in the second half of the 16th century. The keystone of the arched gateway on the west side, now walled in, is still visible and the year "1586" is etched on it. The wide granite entrance porch on the eastern side, with its red and white stucco shield on the keystone, leads into the impressive hall. A freestanding granite pillar and the vaulted ceiling serve to emphasise the grandeur of this magnificent room, which leads into the study, the dining room and the kitchen, now all used as guest accommodations.

Originally this hall was probably used to provide shelter for the coaches of passing wagon drivers.

A staircase leads up to another splendid hall with a central pillar, highly reminiscent of the chapter house of a monastery. Indeed, it may well have served this purpose at some point in the past: the number of ceramic floor tiles found here, which have since been presented to the local museum, also point to the probable existence of a chapel in the building. There have been a number of structural changes over the last few years in order to satisfy the requirements of a modern hotel business. While this has inevitably led to the loss of much of the building’s original character, guests still get a sense of its antiquity and century-old history.

What is known about the hotel’s owners?

Built around 1580 – local tradition has it – as a monastery, the building was later used as an inn. The exact date of this transition is very difficult to establish but a tablet that is now also at the local museum suggests that in the year 1750, a certain ANTONY GREIL and his wife ANNA MARIA SIRELIN owned the inn. This ANTONY GREIL could have been a brother of the famous Baroque painter JAKOB PHILIPP GREIL and the father of the less well-known but very talented local artist, TOBIAS GREIL. It is not easy to trace any other specific owners of the hotel, although the names "FLORA", "PRUGG" and "KURZ" are all documented. Around the year 1920, the NETZER family finally took it over under the name “Gasthof zur TRAUBE."

At the beginning of the 60s, RUDOLF NETZER oversaw the first major renovation. Thanks to the increase in tourism and the active participation of all family members, the “Gasthof zur TRAUBE" has remained universally popular throughout its 400-year history and right up to the present day. It is currently managed by the Fuchs family.

Walls with a tale to tell...

The old walls of our house date back to the 16 Century, and our family has been running 'Die Traube' since 1920
